Use AI as a Personal Practice Tutor: From Hints to Reviewing Wrong Answers
Learn to use AI for practice by having it present one problem at a time, wait for your answer, and then provide hints and explanations instead of immediately giving the answer. Using three percentage problems, you will check which value belongs in the denominator and independently verify AI explanations with your own calculations.

Who this is forBeginners who want to practice basic calculations themselves while using AI as a learning aid
What you need
Be able to do basic multiplication and division
Recalculate answers yourself instead of memorizing AI-generated answers
Do not apply this exercise to cheating on tests, proxy answers for qualification assessments, or medical calculations
01Define AI as a practice partner, not an answer generator
The goal of this article is not to have AI provide all the questions and answers at once. Instead, you will calculate first, ask for a hint only when you get stuck, and receive an explanation of why an answer is wrong when necessary. The exercise uses only three problems: 25% of 80, the price after a 15% discount from 200, and the percentage increase from 40 to 50.
Problem
Answer
Principle to check
What is 25% of 80?
20
Multiply the total 80 by 0.25
What is the price after a 15% discount from 200?
170
Subtract the discount amount 30 from the original 200
What is the percentage increase from 40 to 50?
25%
Divide the increase of 10 by the original value 40
In percentage-change problems such as the third one, choosing the correct denominator is especially important. The percentage increase uses the original value 40 as the denominator, not the new value 50.
02See what is lost when you ask for answers immediately
Prompt
Give me three percentage problems and show me the answers and solutions too.
This request is convenient for checking answers quickly, but it removes the practice process. The following is an intentionally insufficient fictional AI response designed to show the problem. It is an editorial example, not an actual execution result.
Editorial example
[Editorial example · Not an actual AI response]
1) 25% of 80 = 20
2) Subtracting 15% from 200 gives 170
3) Since the value increased from 40 to 50, the percentage increase is 25%
Just remember the formulas.
The answers are correct, but this does not reveal where the learner gets stuck, and it makes it difficult to detect habits such as choosing the wrong denominator. Simply 'remembering the formulas' can also lead to mistakes when a similar problem is worded differently.
03Create a practice rule that waits for your answer one problem at a time
When assigning AI the role of tutor, do more than tell it to hide the answers. Specify the progression. Ask it to present one problem, wait for your answer, and give only one hint before revealing a solution if your first attempt is wrong.
Prompt
Act as a percentage practice tutor. Give me the following 3 problems in order, one at a time, and wait for my answer after each one.
1) 25% of 80
2) The value after a 15% discount from 200
3) The percentage increase from 40 to 50
If I am wrong, do not immediately tell me the answer. Give me only 1 hint first. If I am still wrong on my second attempt, briefly explain the calculation. For the percentage-increase problem, ask me which value is the reference value and which value should be used as the denominator. Show all calculations in simple expressions that I can verify again by hand.
The key point is the learning sequence. If the conversation follows problem, learner answer, hint, retry, and solution check, AI is less likely to replace the learner's entire reasoning process.
04Make sure hints do not perform the calculation for the learner
Suppose the learner gets stuck on the first problem. A useful hint should not immediately reveal the answer 20. It should instead suggest converting 25% to 0.25 or 1/4.
Editorial example
[Editorial example · Not an actual AI response]
Problem: What is 25% of 80?
User: I’m not sure.
AI: I’ll give you one hint. 25% is 25 out of 100, which is the same as 1/4. Try calculating 80 divided by 4.
User: 20.
AI: Correct. Check once more by hand that 80 ÷ 4 = 20.
The second problem can be handled the same way. First calculate that 15% of 200 is the discount amount, and then check that the final price is found by subtracting the discount from the original price. Even if AI says the answer is 170, independently verify 200×0.15=30 and 200-30=170.
05Review the incorrect 20% answer in the percentage-increase problem
For the third problem, suppose the learner answers 20%. That wrong answer comes from calculating (50-40)/50, which divides the increase of 10 by the new value 50. The arithmetic itself is not the main problem; the reference value is wrong.
Editorial example
[Editorial example · Not an actual AI response]
Problem: A value increased from 40 to 50. What is the percentage increase?
User: 20%.
AI: Let’s check the denominator. The 20% result comes from (50-40) ÷ 50 = 10 ÷ 50. But percentage increase asks how much the value increased relative to the original value, so the reference is the original value 40. Divide the increase of 10 by the original value 40 and calculate it yourself.
User: 0.25, so 25%.
AI: Correct. The key is that the original value belongs in the denominator.
The correction criterion here is not simply changing the answer from 20% to 25%. You should be able to explain why 40, not 50, is the reference. Percentage increase compares the change against the original state, so the original value 40 is the denominator.
06Finally, solve all three problems again without AI
After the review, do not simply reread the answers in the same conversation. Solve all three problems independently on paper or in a note. AI explanations can also contain errors, so the calculations should be checked separately.
Calculate 80×25/100 = 20 yourself
Check the two-step calculation 200×15/100 = 30, then 200-30 = 170
Check (50-40)/40 = 10/40 = 0.25 = 25%
Explain in words why the denominator for percentage increase is the original value 40 rather than the new value 50
Distinguish between a calculation mistake and an error in choosing the reference value
Prompt
Create only 1 new problem similar to the three problems we just practiced. Do not tell me the answer yet. Wait until I answer. After I respond, check not only the calculation result but also which value I used as the reference.
This method is appropriate for practice conversations, but it should not be applied directly to cheating on an actual test, answering a qualification assessment on someone else's behalf, or medical calculations where an incorrect result could affect an important decision. Even for learning, the core habit is to verify the final calculation yourself.
What to check yourself
Editorial example using text conversation only · Actual AI responses vary by tool and model
Independently calculate 80×0.25=20 to confirm that 25% of 80 is 20
Confirm step by step that the 15% discount on 200 is 30 and the final value is 170
Confirm that the increase from 40 to 50 is 10
Confirm that the denominator in the percentage-increase calculation is the original value 40
Be able to explain that (50-40)/50=20% uses the wrong reference value
Check whether AI follows the rule of presenting one problem at a time and waiting for the user's answer
Verification limits
This is a learning-oriented editorial example, not the result of testing an actual AI tool's educational performance or effectiveness. Do not use it for cheating on tests, proxy answers for qualification assessments, or medical calculations, and independently recalculate all arithmetic results yourself.
Learn how to get easier-to-check results by giving AI the goal, confirmed facts, prohibited assumptions, and desired format instead of simply asking it to write something. Using a neighborhood book club notice as an example, you will check whether AI invented missing information and then use a follow-up request to adjust only the tone while keeping the facts unchanged.
Learn to calculate the time you actually have available and the time required for your tasks before asking AI to place work into a schedule. The exercise also covers a situation where Wednesday suddenly becomes unavailable and shows how to verify that AI does not invent extra time that does not exist.
